How to Do Fairytale Shadow Work: A Step-by-Step Journaling Guide

What story immediately comes to mind when I ask you to recall a childhood favorite?

I love asking people this question. Finding out what captured someone's childhood imagination reveals which archetype or narrative is still alive in their subconscious today.

In our SpeakEasy Journaling Club, members share a rich spectrum of favou/rite tales—from The Ugly Duckling and The Secret Garden to the dark, terrifying psychological landscape of Bluebeard. These are stories of transformation, but they are also stories of hidden truths.

Fairytales act as secret keys to our inner worlds. Just like the locked room in Bluebeard or the hidden door in The Secret Garden, there are things we intuitively know about ourselves that remain hidden from our analytical mind. A story often unlocks an emotional door that a straightforward, logical question simply cannot touch.

What is Fairytale shadow work Journaling?

In fairytale shadow work, you take a familiar story, identify the specific symbolic elements that catch your attention, and use them as a mirror to ask deep questions about your current life.

There are no "right" or "wrong" answers here. The goal is to let imagery, archetypes, and symbols speak directly to your intuition. It invites you to ask:

  • Is there something here I am missing?

  • What am I not seeing about my situation yet?

Once you ask the question, you simply let the pen move across the paper to reveal the answer.

The 6-Step Fairytale Shadow Work Framework

Just like dreams, the specific story elements that grab your attention are a mirror reflecting where you are right now. The exact same story might draw your attention in completely different ways depending on what you are navigating this week.

To begin, pick your fairytale. It can be a favourite from childhood or a story that recently popped into your mind. Before you start to journal with your fairytale, summarise the story out loud or write a quick synopsis on paper to bring it into your active consciousness.

Then, examine which of these 6 Archetypal Elements stands out the most today:

THE 6 FAIRYTALE SHADOW ELEMENTS

  1. The Place

    (Current Terrain)

  1. The Constraint

(Pressure Field)

  1. The Survival Trait

  1. The Magic Item

    (Hidden Weapon)

  1. The Temptation

    (Shortcut Trap)

  1. The Crossing

    (Action Step)

1. The Place (Your Current Terrain)

  • In the story: A high tower, a dark woods, a secret garden, a glass coffin, or a gingerbread house.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: Where are you sitting mentally, emotionally, or professionally today? Are you wandering in middle-of-the-woods overwhelm, isolated in a tower of your own making, or trapped in a situation that looks sweet on the outside but drains you on the inside.

2. The Villain or Constraint (The Pressure Field)

  • In the story: An impossible task, a wicked stepmother, a curse, a dragon, or a ticking clock at midnight.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: What is the actual, unchangeable constraint facing you this week? Is it an impossible workload, a boundary-pushing client, financial uncertainty, or the noise of social media comparison?

3. The Survival Trait (Your Current Mechanism)

  • In the story: Hyper-sensitivity (feeling the pea), quiet endurance, sharp wit, curiosity, or total defiance.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: What trait are you currently relying on to navigate your life? Is this mechanism genuinely serving your long-term health, or is it time to swap it for a healthier tool?

4. The Magic Item (Your Hidden Weapon)

  • In the story: A glowing doll in a pocket, a golden key, a cloak of invisibility, or an honest mirror.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: Forget waiting for a prince or a magical rescue. What real-world asset, sharp intuition, non-negotiable boundary, or hard-earned skill do you already possess that gives you leverage right now?

5. The Temptation (The Shortcut Trap)

  • In the story: A shiny red apple, a spinning wheel, sugar walls, or trading your voice to a sea witch.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: What quick fix, golden-handcuff opportunity, or compromise is tempting you to lower your prices, mute your boundaries, or sacrifice your peace just to get a fast win?

6. The Crossing (Reaching Sturdier Ground)

  • In the story: Pushing the witch into the oven, crossing the river on a duck’s back, or slipping off the glass slipper.

  • The Shadow Work Mirror: You don't need a 10-year strategy today. What is the single, practical, 5% shift or action that gets you to sturdier, drier ground this week?
